What is in flower for Autumn Weddings

When getting married in late September or early October there is still an abundance of British florals and foliage available in beautiful autumnal tones until the first frosts arrive. The dahlias are at their peak with bright and cheerful colours toning in with the season. They also offer a wide range of versatile shapes and forms.

One of my wedding couples this year chose a mix of beautiful autumnal colours for their day, reds, deep pinks, peaches, lemon yellows and maroons were the theme.  The bridal bouquet was finished with gorgeous deep pink silk velvet ribbon which coordinated beautifully with the bridesmaid dresses.

I used a mix of dahlias in different shades to bring a variety of shapes and range of colours. Added to this were a few garden roses, phlox, salvia, cosmos, zinnia, scabious, sedum and chrysanthemum. I also incorporated autumnal coloured foliage, berries, dried seedheads and grasses to bring a more natural look to the designs.

Autumn is the time that British foliage really comes into the limelight. A few of my favourites are abelia, cotinus, eucalyptus, spindle berry and rosehips are all a wonderful addition to bouquets and event arrangements at this time of year, creating stunning seasonal displays.

I love golden tones– whites, golds, peaches, oranges, lemons mixed with green and golden foliage finished with zingy lime hops, all bringing a light airy feel to an autumnal wedding.

Plums and Pinks are another favourite – plum colours mixed with rosy pinks, lilacs and chocolate tones, wispy grasses and seed heads. Cotinus (Smoke Bush) foliage plumes in deep purple/pink/plum colours are stunning for autumn designs and chocolate cosmos with its dainty velvety petals dancing above the focal flowers create lovely movement.

Autumn really is a time to be imaginative and creative with what the season has to offer.
